Graduation Requirements

The strong comprehensive curriculum enables Bishop Alemany to welcome students whose academic abilities differ greatly. It provides courses on all levels, from high school and college-preparatory through honors, accelerated, and Advanced Placement. For the class of 2011, the requirements for graduation are:

History – 2 years (4 semesters)
A Global History U.S. History U.S. Government AP World History AP U.S. History AP U.S. Government 20th Century U.S. History
English – 4 years (8 semesters)
B English 9 American Literature English Literature College Composition Art, Cultures, & Lit Hon. English 9 Hon. American Literature Hon. English Literature AP English English Composition Understanding Literature
Mathematics – 3 years (6 semesters), 4 years recommended (8 semesters)
C Algebra I Geometry Algebra II Trigonometry Advanced Topics Honors Algebra I Honors Geometry Honors Algebra II Trigonometry/Math Analysis AP Calculus AB AP Calculus BC
Lab Science – 2 years (4 semesters), 3 years recommended (6 semesters)
E Spanish I Spanish II Spanish III Spanish for Bil I Spanish for Bil II Spanish for Bil III AP Spanish Language AP Spanish Literature French I French II French III French IV Korean I
Visual and Performing Arts – 1 year (2 semesters)

College Prep Electives – 1 year (2 semesters)
G 2 semesters of any college prep courses taken beyond the A-G requirements. Please note that a second year of Visual & Performing Art does not fulfill this requirement.
  1. RELIGION – 8 semesters required
    A Religion course is required every semester
  2. ENGLISH – 8 semesters required
    An English course is required every semester
  3. SOCIAL STUDIES – 6 semesters required
    Students must complete:
    • 1 year of Global History (or AP World History)
    • 1 year of U.S. History (or AP U.S. History)
    • 1 semester of U.S. Government (or U.S. Government)
    • 1 semester of Economics
  4. MATHEMATICS – 6 semesters required
  5. FOREIGN LANGUAGE – 4 semesters required
    2 years of the same language required
  6. PHYSICAL EDUCATION – 2 semesters required
    7. SCIENCE – 4 semesters required
    • 2 semesters of biological/life science
    • 2 semesters of physical science
  7. COMPUTER SCIENCE – 1 semester required
  8. VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS – 2 semesters required
  9. ELECTIVES – 6 semesters required
  10. HEALTH – 1 semester required
  11. HOMEROOM – 8 semesters required
