Common Pitfalls

In writing history essays, students may think their task is simply to provide as much detail and information as they can, perhaps to prove how much they know. If they lack a sense of the overall purpose and structure of such essays, they will not see the central importance of the thesis statement within that structure.
Students in a hurry often fail to tailor the thesis statement to the EXACTdetails and form of the DBQ or other essay prompt. They need to pay attention to the question's details, and also to its form (e.g. compare and contrast, explain and describe, assess the validity, etc.), which can guide the way they structure their thesis statement and the essay as a whole.
Students may view the thesis statement as an absolute claim and may make sweeping assertions they can't possibly prove without qualification. They need to see a thesis as a tentative hypothesis, one they should qualify by referring to primary sources that seem to contradict it.
Students need to see that a vague or overly broad thesis statement will make their task harder, not easier. A specific and divided, or segmented, thesis will delimit the task more effectively and make it easier for the student to organize the rest of the essay.

Score the DBQ you took from today's practice. Pay particular attention to:
1. An effective thesis that addresses all aspects of the prompt. Time and place, analysis and inclusion of example factors. If only one factor is given, then no point. Minimum of 2 factors needed.
2. Three or more correct groupings. See scoring guidelines attachment below for acceptable grouping listed by document number.
3. Four points of view showing any or a combination of the following: purpose/motivation of author; clear and comprehensive analysis of tone, style; anticipated audience and what that audience will understand from reading of document.
4. Each document must be accurately understood. A summary of it will not suffice. Think does your essay answer this question; "What is the document about?"
5. Each doc must be coherently analyzed. Think, does your essay tell the reader that you've understood the message of the doc, what is it really saying/commenting on.
6. One missing document. Not from a voice that's already included in the 10 docs...a new voice that has credibility and in-depth knowledge of how particular factors helped shape the modern Olympics. If the justification doesn't EXPLICITLY address this, then no point.
