Prerequisites:                                     Member of the Warrior dance team, Previous Dance training.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

           

This course is designed to provide the students with more advanced dance skills (dance studio training prior to entrance to Bishop Alemany) regarding the elements of dance, body movement, and physical coordination, choreography & music interpretation with an emphasis on performance.  Student will further their understanding of dance through traditional, cultural and contemporary dance styles.  Through viewing dance documentaries, professional performances, amateur high school & college level “dance team” performances, movies, personal evaluations, and performances, students will become even more skilled in dance and will further the skills to analyze and interpret works of dance and the performances of dancers based on standards, principles and cultural context.  They will further their physical skills as well as advance their knowledge of how the body and mind work as one.

 

 

COURSE GOALS:

 

  1. To further develop a core of knowledge in the terminology of dance, choreography, and concepts in dance and the performance arts. (Standard 1)
  2. To further develop communications and movement skills that include body awareness, motor control and multi sensory awareness. (Standard 1)
  3. To develop an appreciation of dance in historical and contemporary cultures throughout the world. (Standard 3)
  4. To create and communicate meaning through dance, improvisation, original composition and performance. (Standard 1 & 3)
  5. To develop a sense of originality, teamwork and creativity necessary to produce a dance performance. (Standard 1 & 3)
  6. To develop expanded avenues for communication and self-expression in the dance and the performance arts. (Standard 1)
  7. To continue to develop the skills, knowledge and standards to analyze, interpret and evaluate works of dance and the performance of dancers based on standards through critical analysis. (Standard 4)
  8. To develop skills in problem solving, communication skills, management of time, usage of resources and material. (Standard 5)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The goal of this class is to allow students with prior dance experience to take their ability to the next level.  Each student will be evaluated on their knowledge of the dances they learn in class.  They will work out everyday, concentrating on eye, hand and body coordination.  The student will focus on creating their own choreography as well as perfecting their dance technique. Their final will consist of the dance recital. 

 

COURSE OUTLINE:

Literature: Dance terminology

Style of dance: Advanced Jazz- 3 weeks, Advanced Hip Hop – 3 weeks, Class Choreography – 3 weeks, Advanced Lyrical/Contemporary dance – 3 weeks.  We will prepare for the dance recital during the remaining weeks.

Recital: Students are required to participate in a dance recital at the end of the semester for their final grade.  NO exceptions!

 

DAILY MATERIALS:  * work out clothes * dance or tennis shoes    

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: All students…

~ are required to have one year of beginning dance or a member of the Alemany dance team.

~ dress in their work out clothes – regardless if they are sick or injured.

~  come to class on time and prepared.

~  returning from an excused absence are responsible for the work they have missed.

~  must participate in class exercise.  Merely attending the class without actively participating in the exercises will not be satisfactory.

~ all assignments will be listed on the Alemany web page.

 

TESTING PROCEDURE:

  • Students will be evaluated on the routines that they have learned in class.
  • Students are given a grade everyday on participation.
  • For every 2 non-dress days the grade will drop one letter grade.
