30-Hour Food Fast  March 25-26, 2010

Information letter here

Parent Permission Form—As Attachment ($5.00 Participation Cost)

Sponsor Sheet—As Attachment  (Minimum $3.00)

March 16, 2010

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As a result of the January earthquake, thousands of children in Haiti are malnourished and go to bed hungry.  The effects of the earthquake have added to the misery of the people of this poor country. Haiti will soon be facing its monsoon rain season.  We want to make a difference by supporting Friends of Haiti, a Catholic organization that has been working with Haiti’s children for over 25 years.

Your student has expressed interest in participating in Bishop Alemany’s 5th Annual 30-Hour Food Fast, a hunger awareness activity joined with a fundraising program to help alleviate this extreme hunger. This 30-hour event includes fasting, prayer, activities, and both shared initial and ending meals.

The 30-Hour Food Fast begins on Thursday, March 25, 2010 with a shared breakfast at 7:30 in the Bishop Alemany Dining Hall.  Our fast ends with a “Breaking-the-Fast” meal on Friday, March 26, after school in the Bishop Alemany Dining Hall. During 30-Hour Food Fast, your child will:

• fast for 30 hours and miss three main meals,

• consume only juice and water during the fast, [These will be provided for students at Nutrition and at Lunch times.  Please, encourage lots of liquid intake during Thursday afternoon and evening!]

• solicit sponsorship pledges to raise money to support international and local hunger-   abatement programs.

Participating students are asked to solicit support from friends, families, neighbors and community members in the form of sponsors or pledges.  The pledge can be a specific amount per hour or a donation for the entire fast.  Sponsors are asked for a minimum of $3 for the entire fast or for $.10 an hour. Since it is a 30-hour fast, each participating student is challenged to have 30 sponsors, representing each hour of the fast. Truly, $1 can feed a child for a whole day, so every dollar of support does make a difference.  The collected funds will be given to Friends of Haiti.

To cover the cost of the initial and final meal, juices and other participation materials, each student is asked for a $5 participation fee.

For most young people/students, fasting in a controlled environment and for a limited period of time is not a health risk. Anyone fasting must drink water and replace solid food with juices (fruit or vegetable) or other non-caffeinated drinks (such as herbal teas). Anyone with a cold or flu, liver or kidney problems, or a serious illness such as diabetes, heart disease, or ulcers, should not take part in the fast. If you are in doubt of your child’s ability to participate, please consult your doctor. For most people, fasting is safe and can be beneficial; however, there are some people who should NEVER fast without professional supervision.

The purpose of the fast is to create an awareness of the impact of poverty, hunger and inequity in a world of plenty and to use our resources to change the future for children throughout our world.

Please complete the attached form and return it to their religion class teacher or to Ms. Sheila Revere (Campus Ministry) TUESDAY, March 23.

Thank you for supporting your child’s participation.

Sincerely,

Ms Jan Galla                                                                          Mr. Bob Warren

A big thank you to everyone who helped with the March 12 faculty service day. Everyone was helpful, hard working, and very supportive. We were able to provide lunch and dinner for everyone served by teh Sylmar Emergency Shelter AND also feed the homeless served by Samoshel! Special thanks to Don Levan, Ligia Cardona, and Sr. Sara for serving dinner at the Sylmar Shelter Wednesday night. Thank you--one and all--for making a difference in the lives of the poor.

BIG SUNDAY
The next Big Sunday weekend will take place on May 3 and 4, 2008.
Last year, on Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29, 2007 over 75 Bishop Alemany students participated the “Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Big Sunday Days of Service.” Students helped at nine sites including Operation Gratitude for our armed service women and men, a project to help find adoptive homes for dogs, beautifying parks and playgrounds, and various projects at food banks for families living in poverty.
Our students were enthusiastic, respectful and hardworking. Special thanks to Ligia Cardona for her leadership role in Big Sunday.

CITRUS SUNDAY 2008 and 2007
April 6, 2008 found Alemany juniors Chris Eldabh, Kashane Sakhakorn, and Jeremy Reyes assisting the several dozen San Fernando Valley community members in harvesting food for local food banks. Dozens of volunteers met at Fire Station 87 and then went to the homes of area residents who donated the fruit of their orange, lemon, and grapefruit trees. The volunteers picked the fruit which was collected at area Fire Stations. In total, over 20,000 lbs. of fruit was given to Valley Interfaith Council for their food banks to distribute to needy San Fernando Valley families.

Citrus Sunday 2007
Twenty one Bishop Alemany students participated in Citrus Sunday on May 3, 2007. Key Club members and generous juniors from Mr. Levan’s and Sr. Sara’s social justice classes.
The students had a great experience—lots of laughter accompanied their work with the citrus pickers and vying for the prized “largest” orange, lemon or grapefruit. In addition, the students helped with the set up and sign in of other participants. Two students spent the morning packing the truck with the harvested fruit—these boys received compliments from all who saw them work or with whom they worked. All students involved gave evidence to the last part of the BAHS mission statement! The paparazzi were also out and several of our students were interviewed and filmed by ABC 7. Needless to say, THAT did excite the students!
This was a very clear public statement of BAHS students’ involvement in community as “courageous leaders in service to others!”

LA DAYS OF SERVICE, May 3 and 4, 2008
Join in LA city-wide DAYS OF SERVICE on Saturday, May 3 or Sunday, May 4, 2008. Alemany students have volunteered to serve at the SOVA food bank. More information about SOVA and other volunteer activities can be found at www.bigsunday.org!
