Every year, students at Bishop Alemany High School have the opportunity to show their spirit by participating in annual Spirit Week, which includes the homecoming bonfire, homecoming game, and homecoming dance. At the bonfire, which is an evening pep rally highlighted by a bonfire, several dance routines are performed; however, the bonfire features an exclusive Boy-Girl Dance. Annaive “Annie” Garcia (11), a first time performer, describes the preparation as an exciting, yet nerve racking experience. “I was a little bit scared at first cause like I felt like he was gonna like drop me or something", Garcia says, in regards to her partner Daniel Berrellez (11). She knew, however, as the performance approached that she had to trust him. Reflecting on her experience, Garcia felt that she and Berrellez performed well.
The following night, the Alemany community comes together to cheer the Varsity Football team during the annual homecoming game. This year, the team played against Loyola High School, winning 34 to 8. When asked about her time at the game, this year’s queen, Lynette Serna (12), personally “loved [it] more than the dance.” Serna was crowned queen during halftime, making this night one to remember for her.
This all culminates in the final event: the homecoming dance. According to Associative Student Body (ASB) members, Samantha Tapia (11) and Alyssa Velasco (12), planning the dance was a process that began during the summer. “Usually we pick the theme at the summer camp. We spend, I think, a couple of days during the summer” explains Velasco.
“I feel like ASB does a really good job... I just can’t wait to see what we do next year,” Tapia concludes.
