STORY BOOK Homework
STORY BOOK GUIDELINES:
1 - Your story need not be complicated. Just write the story of this Christian hero in a way that you would have enjoyed hearing when you were very young.
2 - Use a typed font of your choice or caligraphy for your story.
3 - Add art and/or illustrations to enhance your story. Pictures, shapes, colors, connect-the-dots are all examples of art that can be interesting for children.
4 - Remember the kinds of things you enjoyed seeing in a book. Perhaps you remember a paper doll attached to your book, that you could hold or insert into a holder on one of the pages.
5 - Add a nice cover to your book.
6 - You may bind your book by using tape, a three hole punch and ribbon; or you may choose to purchase a small spiral bound journal or sketchbook for your work.
7 - Your book should have at least 10 pages, (5 pages, front and back).
8 - Neatness counts.

St. Francis Xavier (1506-1552)
Jesus asked, “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Matthew 16:26a). The words were repeated to a young teacher of philosophy who had a highly promising career in academics, with success and a life of prestige and honor before him. Francis Xavier, 24 at the time, and living and teaching in Paris, did not heed these words at once. They came from a good friend, Ignatius of Loyola, whose tireless persuasion finally won the young man to Christ. Francis then made the spiritual exercises under the direction of Ignatius, and in 1534 joined his little community (the infant Society of Jesus). Together at Montmartre they vowed poverty, chastity and apostolic service according to the directions of the pope.
From Venice, where he was ordained priest in 1537, Francis Xavier went on to Lisbon and from there sailed to the East Indies, landing at Goa, on the west coast of India. For the next 10 years he labored to bring the faith to such widely scattered peoples as the Hindus, the Malayans and the Japanese. He spent much of that time in India, and served as provincial of the newly established Jesuit province of India.
Wherever he went, he lived with the poorest people, sharing their food and rough accommodations. He spent countless hours ministering to the sick and the poor, particularly to lepers. Very often he had no time to sleep or even to say his breviary but, as we know from his letters, he was filled always with joy.
Francis went through the islands of Malaysia, then up to Japan. He learned enough Japanese to preach to simple folk, to instruct and to baptize, and to establish missions for those who were to follow him. From Japan he had dreams of going to China, but this plan was never realized. Before reaching the mainland he died. His remains are enshrined in the Church of Good Jesus in Goa.

OPTION 1: Read an article from "Mission" magazine, available in my classroom. Type up a one page reflection paper expressing what you learned about the efforts of the church to assist the poor. Second, write about your thoughts on the efforts and how it affected you personally.
OPTION 2: Read a recent article from a major newspaper about a person or community of people who feel "exiled" or without a country. Type up a one page report on what you learned from your reading: what happened in the article. Second, include your opinion as to how the situation should be reconciled. Please attach the article to your work.
OPTION 3: Find a photo or a magazine picture that illustrates one of your favorite quotes from scripture. Carefully present the picture on art paper, use the quote as the title of your work. On the back, attach a half page typed explanation of how the picture demonstrates the message of Jesus.
Example quotes: " Jesus' heart was moved" or "Jesus wept." Both from the story of Lazarus. Don't forget to site your passage (tell me where it comes from in scripture).
OPTION 4: Participate in the "Food Drive" by contributing nonperishable canned and packaged foods to needy families. If your family is able, place your items in a plastic or paper sack, with your name and class period on it. Include a card or a prayer for the person who will be receiving your package. Thanks for your generosity!
OPTION 5: Think of a situation today in which you, someone you know, or a whole group of people could be as forgiving of another who has hurt them as Joseph was to his brothers who had sold him into slavery. Type a page essay about how difficult it might be to forgive, and about the good that might come from it.

Extra Credit: Cartoon Search - collect and share cartoons concerned with any of hte characteristics of friendship (chapter 1), happiness (chapter 2), faith (chapter 2). Anytime you find a good cartoon illustrating a theme we have discussed in class, you are welcome to bring it in for everyone to enjoy. Students are limited to one cartoon per theme, and twenty in a semester.
Retreats: Mrs. Hise class periods 3 and 4 will go on retreat October 28;
periods 1 and 2 will go on retreat on November 4. I will be sending permission slips with directions to Poverello Retreat Center, dress code, lunch plan, soon.

Activity 1: Think up a metaphore for God that is somewhat original - not typically used to describe God. Using color, draw or collage the image, and attach a typed paragraph explaining what your metaphore is trying ot convey about God, and how well you like it as a descriptor of God.
