Description
Welcome to English Literature 11 A/B! This site is a launching point to the class resource site which you will need to bookmark.

The Class Website has been developed with the intention of being a resource for both students and teachers of English Literature and Writing Composition. Within it you will find a variety of tools to help you bring to life the language, the characters, people and time period within our classroom.

The study of the British tales is not just a focus on the text, but it is the understanding of the society each author lived in, the history that influenced (or was influenced) by the writings as well as the affect this has on the individual reader. In studying English Literature, we focus on more than a language, we examine the study of who we are and how we are individuals striving to develop the skills, knowledge and talents which we use to create an awareness for the community around us.

For the Honors student, this is a course that  provides advanced junior students an opportunity to rigorously read and analyze the major writers in English literature in preparation for the optional Advanced Placement Language exam in May of their junior year, as well as the mandatory Advanced Placement Literature exam in senior year. Summer reading is required prior to the first day of this course.

Honors Summer Reading: Nordic Gods and Heroes.

Assignment

HONORS ONLY: Hollywood have been getting literate! Bookish pedigrees are a sure way to get Academy members' attention, so studios have turned to acclaimed novels for their cellulose fodder. But there's a risk involved. Ask any reader who has seen the movie version of a favorite novel, and the answer will usually be, "The book was better." That's because readers of a novel have already made their own perfect movie version. They have visualized it, fleshed out the locations and set the pace as they either zipped through the book or scrupulously savored every word. Often they have even cast it.
Carefully but critically, for it's simply not an option to be totally faithful to a fat novel. Almost any novel's plot must be compressed into a black hole of incident and image. Then there's the challenge any movie faces of putting thoughts into words, emotions into gestures, descriptions into actions. And always the adapters must worry not just about satisfying those persnickety readers but also about pleasing the audience ignorant of the book.
Whether it is by movie or by book, it is the medium when people experience a story first. Debates will always rage over the merits of each version. So, we're here to add kindling to that fire. Which ones win? I'll present the data, but you'll decide.

ASSIGNMENT: Read the summaries of the books, then view the Youtube clips to determine 1) what changes were made  2) why were the changes made  3) were they appropriate of did they lose quality?

DUE: Tuesday May 11

Musical Theater Review - Extra Credit

When writing a review of a musical event, always remember that this is a subjective, personal opinion which may be agreed with or not by the reader. Your opinion of what happened is the most important aspect of the review. As a part of the review, however, you need to keep in mind that your readers may not have been at the show. Because of this you will need to mention certain basic information as a part of the review. The review can focus on a single idea from an essay, or it can deal with an entire essay, focusing on its most conspicuous features. It can also focus on a play, looking at the overall impact, or a theme one finds. Just be sure to tell your reader, in a thesis statement, what it is you are going to do, and then support the thesis with specific examples, details, and quotes. This is a 2-3 page MLA typed document, make sure to read the tips.

Make sure to staple YOUR TICKET to the REVIEW

1. Who plays -- Mention the performers by name. If they have a main character role be sure to include this name as well. Most reviews also include a mention of the date, time, and place of the performance. If there is a large group playing such as an orchestra, don't forget to mention them and the conductor.

Always comment on the overall quality of the performance including specific examples of what you heard.

2. What was performed -- List at least 2-3 key pieces performed and discuss it from the standpoint of both the quality of the piece itself and the quality of the performance. Include all of the vital information needed to identify exactly what piece was performed.

Usually the manner in which it is listed in the program will suffice. DO NOT, however, list the entire program as the opening of your review. List each work and discuss it immediately. Be sure to list any changes to the program or encores played.

3. Tell the reader whether or not you liked the show. This is the single most important aspect of a review. Was the program worth watching? Did you like the music used, the drama and dance performance, the character interaction? Please explain as specifically as possible what you did or did not like about the performance. This is the most subjective area of the review and should be the bulk of what you say. You may be critical, but try not to get personal. DO NOT use the word "boring."

4. Refer to performers by full name the first time, and thereafter by last name only. Do not personalize your relationship by referring to any of the actors by any nicknames they may have, even if you know them quite well.

You may keep mental notes during the performance, or write your impressions on the program. It is not appropriate to discuss what you are observing with anyone during the concert. You may discuss your impressions with your friends afterward, but write your own review. Also, do not enter or leave the auditorium at any time during a performance except in cases of emergency. In all cases you should try to enter or leave during a silence between movements or at the end of a piece. Most of all, have fun and enjoy the concert.

Organizing a review essay:

Introduction

  • Introduce the play, the director, and any other pertinent information. The reader needs to know immediately what you are critiquing.
  • Give a brief summary, 2 or 3 sentences, of the play. A quote may or may not be useful here.
  • Introduce your thesis.

Main body

  • Fill the body of your paper with an analysis of the play, covering the points stated in the play. What you do not want is a summary of the play that simply restates what the play is about.
  • Make sure you have firm topic statements that remind reader what you are critiquing.
  • Check, particularly if you are covering several different aspects of a play, that you have smooth transitions that join dissimilar ideas and smooth transitions that link paragraphs.
  • Make sure you have adequate support for each main point you make (1 main point per paragraph).
Conclusion

Closure: return to your thesis in some way. Sum up your ideas. A conclusion with this type of paper can be done usually in a sentence or two, probably attached to your last paragraph. A more formal closure can be used as well. Leave the reader with a powerful thought.

If you are in the play, the above instruction are appropriate for your review as well. Although you do not watch the show, I would like your input on the play from a performer's perspective. You've worked on this musical for several months now, has there been much change? what did it take to get here? Are there any people who are worthy of receiving your recognition for improving throughout the rehearsals? etc

Daily Agenda (Tues 1/12): Finish Metaphysical & Cavalier Poets

Honors HW
Write -
Short Essay: During the period of the Restoration a myriad of poets constructed an epoch submerged in metaphysical literature, in which a number of significant events both socio-political, entwined with a systematic religious metamorphism  of the sixteenth and seventeenth century led to a time of unrest and discovery.  Choose a 1-2 works from any of the assigned Restoration period authors and answer the following in a 2 page typed MLA formatted response:

  • The words of a literary work do not always represent the thoughts of an author directly.  At times the speaker in the poem is the special voice of the author, who has motives  that give color to what the author wishes to say. Ask yourself about the speaker's motives for speaking and identify the situation that gives rise to is speech.

  • Now, as you read, identify who the speaker is and what the situation could be.  Test this theory as you read further.

  • It's always poems that cause us to draw inferences, especially since the writer does not tell everything directly.  Fortunately they do provide details from which you can 'read between the line' to uncover the ideas not spelled out.

  • A series of inferences can lead to a fortified conclusion supported by the text.  What conclusions can you draw that helps you understand the work as a whole and recognize its purpose?

  • Don't forget to explain your findings and the significance of what the author's perspective on the subject matter.. or on life itself.

Be sure to cite specific passages from poems to illustrate any unique characteristics.

Write MLA essay (3 pages): On the surface, the Nun’s Priest’s Tale is a fable, a simple tale about animals that concludes with a moral lesson. Actually, the tale is a much more complex allegorical story that parodies of epic poetry, medieval scholarship, and courtly romance.
Using only Chaucer's tale of the Nun's Priest as support; you will develop a thesis-driven essay that responds to the following question:
"Explain how the Nun's Priest's Tale illustrates the parodies of epic poetry, medieval scholarship and courtly romance."

**  Remember that your thesis should give an answer to the question you select and that in the body of your essay you need to support or prove this answer with evidence from the text.

Assignment

Welcome to Mr. Apolinario's British Literature course.

I look forward to a wonderful semester. In order to succeed in this class being fully prepared is essential. I will be expecting that you have assignments read, with questions completed prior to each class. I will also need you to review the course syllabus. As juniors you are now part of the upper echelon of the school, and (in the immortal words of Spiderman) 'with great power comes great responsibility'.

There will be guidance, but a gradual move toward the independence which you need to begin practicing. So, it is your duty to make sure that you and your parents are aware that all homework is posted on the Alemany website and you are familiar with how to retrieve it. I also encourage you to share the information handed out in class with your parents. These include the syllabus, grading scale, expectations, class lessons etc...

The remainder of this week, you are responsible for bringing the proper supplies to class. You are also to bring back the notes we are taking each day and any handouts I give in class - DO NOT leave them at home. All of these notes and handouts should be in your binder - DO NOT throw anything away.

If you or your parents ever have a question or concern, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email is [email protected] and the school number is (818) 365-3925 ext. 5309.

Thank you, and I look forward to a wonderful semester.
