Memorize 10 meaningful passages from the Old Testament. These first 6 are the ones I am assigning.  You need to select 4 that are meaningful for you.  Anticipate that you will be asked to write these in the FINAL and to write about the meaning of the passage.

#1--Numbers 6: 24-25  "May the LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace."

#2--Dt. 6:4-5  "Here, Israel. the LORD......"   All of this.

#3--Isaiah 6:3  "Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory."

#4--Jeremiah 29:11-14   :For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.  Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you.  When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me says the LORD."

#5--Micah 6:8  "...what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God."

5.8 Homework                                16 points

If you did not complete the essay topics on Tuesday's in-class worksheet, please complete them by Friday.

Essay Do two of these on your own paper!

2 questions:  Select any 1 topic from #1 to 6 AND everyone does #7.

ONE OF THESE

 1.    God sometimes chooses the most unlikely persons to accomplish God’s purposes in the world. Give an example of this from the Book of Judges.

2     Explain how the practice of the ban and violent warfare could be justified by scriptural writers as God’s will.

  3.    Reflect in writing about the difficulty a person, perhaps you, can have in holding nothing back in his or her devotion to God. Then recall a story from the Book of Joshua that illustrates the consequences of not doing so.

  4.    Is the Canticle of Deborah meant to glorify violence? Explain your answer.

 5.    Tell the story of a man from the Book of Judges who might have been great if he had used his gifts to do good. What message does his story have for you personally?

6.    The Jews long debated the question of whether it was right or good that a Gentile be welcomed by marriage into the community of Israel. How did the Book of Ruth shed light on this question?

 AND DO THIS ONE

Assignment

NEWSCAST about JUDGES             Group score: 20 points/Participation

Complete the assigned reading from the Book of Judges.
You may want to read about your Judge from your textbook:  pages 105 to 112.

In class on Block Day, you and your group will have 15 minutes (after Rosary!), to plan and rehearse your NEWS REPORT on your JUDGE. Please include a commentator who gives background information, an interview of one of key people from the reading, and a "live action" shot of the work/success/challenges of your judge.

PRESENTATIONS will be the last 20 minutes of the class on Wed./Thurs., so be sure you are ready to use class time productively.

I am anticipating that the presentation will show the Deuteronomist's pattern:
sin, punishment, repentance, forgiveness.  Also, clearly presented should be the idea that God ofter chooses the least likely to carry out God's work.

Period 1

You began your reading in class on Monday. I think you were clear about who your JUDGE is, so I did not repeat your groups here.
