AP World History (Period 3) Assignments

Hi Guys!
As a reminder, the final is on the "isms" powerpoints from Chloe and Alex. See previous homework attachments from a couple of weeks ago. Just review the terms and definitions and you'll be fine. I've broken up to test into sections of 5, so for example, you'll get 5 "isms" and 5 definitions to match, in each section. They are self explanatory so you'll be able to do a process of elimination for the difficult ones if you don't remember.
Test will take you about 45 mins max, so the sub will show you a DVD/Video for the remainder of you can study for other finals or read a book. I'll tell the sub.
I've also done a matching exercise for 20 questions, mostly dealing with the Cold war and recent terms: again should be explanatory if you read the definition. Included in these are Berlin Wall, apartheid, iron curtain, glasnost, ayatollah, Truman doctrine, Al-Qaeda, Tienamen square, Persian gulf war, Warsaw pact, world bank, European union, OPEC, World Trade Organization, Euro currency, Sadam Hussein, Che Guevara, Lech Walesa and Solidarity, Terrorism, Ethnic cleansing. Don't worry, the definitions will guide you. Keep in touch with me over the summer, by email. I'll be making contact with you when results are back in mid July. Yeah!!!!!! Summer time!

k, know this is late, but for all you high achievers, (and aspiring high achievers) here is an extra credit opportunity.
1. Look over the "Recurring Themes in AP World History", handout I gave you recently.
2. Select one theme, e.g. Social traditions and social reforms; Development of trade and trading networks; Nationalism; Reasons and consequences of military conflict, Comparison and Influences of major belief systems & religions, etc.
3. Create a "top ten" list of theme-specific headlines.
4. Create 1-3 bullet points that address each of the 10 headlines.
5. Build a powerpoint presentation and be ready to deliver to the whole class. (max 10 slides of written content, additional slides of photos, drawings, political cartoons, graphs, maps, etc are permitted and encouraged)

As you create this, imagine you've been given one of these themes to respond to in essay format. You will need to select a defined time period that stretches over a sustained period of time (think changes and continuities over centuries all related to the selected theme). For example, Nationalism is a term that first emerged in the 1770's, so your powerpoint would cover nationalism and its emergence globally from 1770 to the C20th. In as much as possible, you need to think "globally" and examine how your theme impacted the globe or if more specifically related to a particular continent, then fine, stick to more of a defined geography. I'm not looking for an essay-style powerpoint, more of the key headings and 1-3 bullet point supporting evidence.
A maximum of 2% in addition to your existing grade will be awarded. To get the full 2%, you will need to really impress me, so get working! Due no later than Wednesday next week.

Read and review ch 31. Focus your reading on;
The Cold War...evaluate which side was more responsible for starting and developing it. Catalog the key events that shaped the Cold war over a 40 yuear period from 1948-91. What implications did the Cold War have on Western Europe? How did the Soviets take advantage of their eastern European neighbors? Evaluate the successes of the Communist system .

Here are some study tips for you....know about...tech improvements in the C15th, Dutch and British trade companies, what moved within the Colombian exchange, famous battles of the C16th, the terms for economic policy, types of labor systems, what happened first in Europe in terms of major developments i.e. monarchy, enlightenment, renaissance, reformation, why Luther got support from the German elites, theology of Calvin, how science was viewed by the West, important cities in Russia and why, Catherine westernization, Peter's political reforms, Russian serfdom, the merchant class in Russia, labor systems of the Americas, who the main European invaders were, the impact of American bullion, major American colonies, C18th reforms that recast colonial administration, important trade forts, differences between geographical slave trade, a "healthy" male during these times, how much money was made from the slave trade, why the colonies needed slaves, make-up of slave families, who were the leaders of the ottoman empire, all about the Janissaries, why this battle was important, official languages of the muslim empires, Akbar's reign, how was the Mughal empires dutch trading ports, Jesuit missionaries, the Zhenghe expeditions, the Ming emperors, Ming social organization.

As corrected today, please review chapters 16-22 for the Mid term. There will be 50 multiple choice questions, at least 50% taken from previous quizzes. The other percentage highlights other big features.

Begin your review of chapter 18, The Rise of Russia. You reading should highlight how Russia interacted with the West. As such , Russia's empire from 1450-1800 developed considerably and successive rules either has strong or weak links with the West. You should know how these interactions developed, who the key players were, the effect of Westernization in Russia during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Please see the powerpoint on chapter 17 below for your study. Today's class is the only in-class content we'll do, so be sure and review the Pp as back-up.

Have been getting a few emails about the essay. So to assist you guys, see the info below which should help you plan and execute!

Re. the essay: look at the key words in the title; "Describe" etc. Break down the task: Time frame is 16th and 17th centuries compared to previous time period (post classical and early middle ages), place is global-how different parts/civilizations interacted with each other-how did the globe become more complete etc.; finally, event is trade and trade networks. How/why did they work, for who. etc? Second part deals with (1) list and comment on the reasons, (2) place is globe trading network, evaluate the "dominance" aspect. Include a proper thesis that addresses the task and a solid rounding off conclusion.

This chapter gives us a fantastic global overview of exploration and colonization by the major European powers at the time. Their will be a quiz on this on Wednesday so we're getting thru the chapter pretty quickly. Don't fall behind!

Review and be prepared to discuss Chapter 15, The West and the Changing balance of Power. This is an important transition chapter so it's crucial you cover its content well yourself. We will go over key points.

For the essay part of your final exam, here is the list of options to prepare for. On next Friday, I will choose 2 from the following 4 essays. You will complete one from a choice of two during the class period. You will need to study at least 3 topics to ensure you can select one on the day of the assignment.
1. Identify and evaluate the ways Islam influenced sub-Saharan African culture during the post classical period.
2. In what ways did the three philosophical movements of classical China shape its civilization during the period?
3. Compare and contrast the social, cultural, economic and political patterns of the Aztecs and Incas with the Tang-Song dynasties.
4. Compare the caste system to other systems of social inequality devised by early and classical civilizations, including slavery.

read and review fisrt section of chapter 13 that deals with Japan under Chinese influence. Focus your reading on who Chinese civilization impacted Japan in all areas. Look at the emergence of the powerful families in Japan and also link your understanding to how Japanese feudalism compares and contrasts to the European version.

1. Know the political organization of the Byzantine empire and how it effected eastern Europe. What defined it, what role did Roman pattern play, the role of the emperor, connection with the church, what impact the empire had on the Russians and the development of Russia.
2. Be able to compare Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholicism.
3. Evaluate the reasons for the decline of the Empire

Chapter 8 reading. Skim read and find the following:
List 3 common elements in pre-Islamic African society. Think language and religion.
Outline how Islam entered Africa.
Describe the Sudanic states and how they were organized.
How did Islam and the belief of the native people fuse among their respective African societies.
Compere the Islamic effect on India and SE Asia with that on sub-Saharan Africa.

Complete your reading of chapter 7. Again, focus on the spread of Islam to SE Asia, the role the Sufis played and the development of the religion.

Index card the following:
Sufis, Seljuk Turks, Delhi Sultanate, Ulama, Mongols, Mahmud of Ghazni, Sati, Bhaktic cults, Shrivijaya, Malacca, Sultan, Mamluks, Rajas, Eunuchs, Demak, Latten Sails, Buyids, Al-Mahdi, Harun al Rashid. Just put key information of each of these. Know who/what they are famous or significant for.

Chapter 7 reading. Focus your reading on the following.
Examine the cultural, economic and political aspect of the Abbasid empire. Keep in mid differences with the Umayyad emporium.
Look care fully at how the spread of Islam into India and SE Asis occurred. Note the key developments, the role that the Sufi mystics played and the role of traders.

Re-do the documents analysis following the guidelines I gave you today. Submit, (typed please) on Friday.

ok, guys...just some clarification on the Documents Task the sub did with you on Monday. I know all of you have at least started, so this task won't take you too long to complete.
In your response, I'm looking for the following: (1) Opening paragraph with a thesis statement...think you are an independent blogger writing about all the varying opinions. (2) Support your thesis with evidence from the docs. (3) summarize/tell me about each doc in your own words, (4) analyze each of the docs and group them together in 2 or more ways, i.e. those in favor.against, exaggerated praise or not etc, tell me about bias observed or not and comment (5) speculate how these docs could be "improved" with the inclusion of an additional doc....i.e. what other excerpt would fit the overall tone of the docs, enhance the reader's knowledge of what actually went on.

Read and review chapter 6 on the Rise of Islam. This is a fascinating chapter as it has direct relevance to our modern world and you should study it carefully. Focus your reading and attention to detail on the following: The rise and role of "Dar-al-Islam" (see below) as a unifying cultural and economic force in Eurasia and Africa. Pay attention to Islamic political structures, notably the Caliphate. Learn about Islamic influence on the arts, sciences and technologies.

Dar al-Islam: literally house/abode of Islam; or Dar as-Salam, house/abode of Peace; or Dar al-Tawhid, house/abode of Union) is a term used by Muslim scholars to refer to those countries where Muslims can practice their religion freely

The two requirements for a country to be part of Dar al-Islam are according to the founder of this concept, Abu Hanifa, the following two:

1. Muslims must be able to enjoy peace and security with and within this country.
2. It has common frontiers with some Muslim countries.

If the former does not apply then physical means such as Jihad can be used to correct the situation and in the latter case, individuals are required to do hijra to where they can practice their religion.

Muslim scholars maintain that the labeling of a country or place as being a part of Dar al-Islam revolves around the question of religious security. This means that if a Muslim practices Islam freely in his place of abode despite that the place happens to be secular or un-Islamic, then he will be considered as living in the Dar al-Islam.

Jump ahead to chapter 5 and read and review pages 98- top of page 106. Ignore the "In Depth" section, we'll work on that in class.

Complete reading of the chapter on classical Rome and Greece. Focus your main attention on how Rome declined.

Read from pages 79 to top of page 87. Leave out the "In Depth" section. Focus your reading on how Greece and Rome grew their respective political structures and how Rome grew from a republic to an Empire

Complete the reading of chapter 3 India. Do not do the "In_Depth" section. Remember to bring in your index cards on India for friday.

Reading assignment, pages 56 - top of page 64. Stop at Religion and Culture section.
As you read, focus the patterns of early Indian history, what did the Aryans contribute and develop? What part did India's geography play in it's emergence as a classical civilization?
Index card #'s 21-25 as well as Caste system, Sanskrit, Vedas, Ramayana, dharma.

Reading assignment pages 49 thru 54. Study the In depth (blue) section on pages 50-51. Write a short written response. List some key bullet points-not essay format) to the comp questions and be prepared to discuss in class tomorrow.
Index cards: Complete definition/explanation and on reverse-side, list 2-3 key points for each. Complete #41 thru 52 from your "Must Know" Peoples, Civilizations & Places handout. Note other any other "bolder" vocab items from Chapter 2.

Well done on the quiz today. For the weekend, please read and review pages from page 38 thru 48, chapter 2 on Classical China. Focus your reading on 1. how the 3 dynasties emerged, what similarities and differences were there?; how Confucianism supported the political structure; and how was China able to support (and accept) two distinct belief systems (Religions).

Complete reading the "Global Connections" section on page 27 and the Global Retrospective sections pages 30-31. There will be a multiple choice quiz during Friday's lesson on what we've covered in chapter one. For the first part of the chapter, pre-page 15, focus on the "bolded" vocabulary- there are just 4-6 vocab items to learn and index card for yourself.

Read the In depth section on pages 24-25 and respond to the comp Q's. Read from pages 15- top of page 27. (NOTE: Do not read page 21...that's for later) Focus your reading so that you will be able to compare and contrast the the Tigris-Euphrates, Indian and Chinese River valley civilizations. Note-take the key features that define each civilization. Note all bolded vocab/text items in this section (if not already done so from last week) -Index cards.
