Description
One semester course covering word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software - MS Office 2007. Course also covers computer terminology, basic history, Internet searches, file management, keyboarding, and some Publisher if time permits.

Assessments will be used to determine the level of detail students currently know and guide their progress through the course packet.

There will no longer be a book ($55+) to purchase. We are trying a new packet made of handouts that will be kept in the class. Students will learn more about this within the first week or so of school. A nominal fee will be charged to provide the materials. I think it will be around $10 this semester. This material will include a binder for this class.
NOTE: all funds will go to technology for the classroom - particularly projectors and digital video presenters (Elmos).
.
Please note: Students who have not yet reached 45 WPM must practice at home as part of their homework each and every week. For some practice typing at home you can use yahoo's typer shark or check out this web site

To contact me - [email protected]

See course syllabus below found in both Word 2007 (docx) format and Rich Text Format (rtf) for those who do not have Word 2007.

Finals - Notes

Play the attached Game to get ready for the test.  As of Saturday 12-11
  • I placed the version of the vocabulary PPT that we reviewed in class
  • I placed a version of an updated Game (jeopardy) that I showed you in class
  • I have attached each of these as a PowerPoint 97-2003 file type (extension) AND
  • I have also attached a web version for those of you who do not have PowerPoint - file type mht.  It runs a bit slower, but it works!!  In fact you may want to check it out just to see how it works.
REMINDER - Note cards - if you have not brought in 20 cards yet, you must do as part of your final.  Place them in a plastic bag with your name and period clearly marked.  Those who turned in 20 already - just bring them to class.  Those who turned in less than 20 add to it and return it on Final day.  This will be worth about 10% of your final grade.

REMINDER - Bring in your vocabulary powerpoint handout that you marked up to class.  If you lost it see me or PRINT AN OUTLINE FROM PPT.  This is worth 5 pts on final.

CLASS Assignment - today we are going to try a new way to learn how to work with SmartArt Graphics in Microsoft Word.  Please bring up Microsoft Word.  Save the document as Venn Diagram - Lastname (your lastname) in the my documents folder for now.  Type your name at the top and then on the next line type in SmartArt Graphics - Venn Diagram.

Next click on the link below and watch the video clip.  You should use your head phones or turn the sound down.  Pause the demo and do whatever it tells you on your own word document.  I would only watch a few steps at a time.  Obviously you may rewind if necessary.  You do not have to type in the paragraph information - just the Venn Diagram.  Use the words that they use for this example.

Good Luck!

Mid-Term

You MUST bring your information for another Mid-Term to Period 1 so you can type up a study guide for that mid-term.  You will lose up to 15% on this mid-term if you do not show up with notes (written or typed).  Bringing a book all by itself and no work will make you lose points.

See the attached rich text formatted document for the PowerPoint features you will use.

I have also supplied an older version of Word format.  Sometimes it is best to save the file on you computer and then start your word processor.  Open from there - you may have to switch document types to help find the correct one.

This should be done by Tuesday at 4:00 or an e-mail should be sent from you or your parents indicating if you need more time.  You may also speak with me after class on Tuesday.

We will be using Excel Packet next week.  Each student should have one by then if at all possible.

Thanks Mrs. Espinosa

Assignment

Just an FYI to parents.  I have asked students to create and e-mail for themselves for this class.  We might do it in class this week or they might do it on their own.  I want students to know how to attach files to e-mails so they can move files back and forth from home to school.  They can use a USB drive in the library or in the classroom, but sometimes it might be easier to attach a file and send to and from school.  At my house we even send e-mails with attachments to get it to the right printer.  Students might need to send me something as well.

So if your student says that I have requeste this, please know that it is true.  Thanks for your support.  Mrs. Espinosa

Due:

Assignment

File Management Quiz - Students may take the practice worksheet home.  The quiz will be on the block day - Wed. 9/1

Due:

Assignment

Homework - Pay for the binder ($10) and packet by going to the tuition window between now and August 31 - Tuesday by end of day.  You may pay with cash or make a check out to Bishop Alemany High School - in the memo area put "Comp Sci. Packet. - put name of student too"  Keep the receipt for proof of payment - although I am going to have them run list. The tuition windows are to the right of the circle area as you are facing the chapel.  It's kind of a walk-up.  They are open until about 4:00.  You can pay during lunch or after school.  Maybe not enough time before school.

Parents this will cover the cost of the materials and binder and any leftover money goes to technology equipment for the school.  We are buying more and more projectors for the classrooms and this is helpful.  Also it replaces a very expensive book that we use to require.

Reminder - binders will be kept in class.  I will distribute binders once the paid list is made.

Thanks

Assignment

First Keyboarding assessment on Friday. Students have spent about 6 days on the computer getting use to the keyboard. Reminder that this is the first assessment. I will enter a basic grade early next week but will not click on Grading Complete until another one has been taken closer to the first progress report. Students who are not typing around 40 wpm, should be typing at home each night. I will give more details soon. For now just type, type, type - your homework, the freetyping links, etc.
