AP World History (Period 3) Assignments

Hi Guys!
The final is on the "isms" powerpoints. See previous homework attachments from a couple of weeks ago. Just review the terms and definitions and you'll be fine. I've broken up to test into sections of 5, so for example, you'll get 5 "isms" and 5 definitions to match, in each section. They are self explanatory so you'll be able to do a process of elimination for the difficult ones if you don't remember.

I've also done a matching exercise for 20 questions, mostly dealing with the Cold war and recent terms: again should be explanatory if you read the definition. Included in these are Berlin Wall, apartheid, iron curtain, glasnost, ayatollah, Truman doctrine, Al-Qaeda, Tienamen square, Persian gulf war, Warsaw pact, world bank, European union, OPEC, World Trade Organization, Euro currency, Sadam Hussein, Che Guevara, Lech Walesa and Solidarity, Terrorism, Ethnic cleansing. Don't worry, the definitions will guide you. Keep in touch with me over the summer, by email. I'll be making contact with you when results are back in mid July. Yeah!!!!!! Summer time!

Confirmation of the website project proposals:
Period 1
Joey's group. 4 Religions Powerpoint. Make sure you develop your pp in terms of a potential answer to a potential question (either CCOT or C&C) related to your selected religions. Illustrations to enhance memory will make it more interesting.
Ramiro's group: Newspaper outlining the post classical period. Select 2 regions/countries from this time period for issue 1. Make sure you have links to word documents that act as a "read more" kinda approach, considering you are reporting on 6 key themes. Make it an online newspaper.
Bridget's group. Podcast on advice/tips for dealing with the year. Make sure you read the tips section so as not to duplicate. Create a timeline of what and when they should divide the year into study components.
Alyssa's group. Podcast. Stay to the nation states building for this modern period and flesh it out as comprehensively as possible.
Franks' group Podcast. Make sure you focus on causes and effects, similarities and differences. Again potential exam question focused content.
Individuals' Again, all you produce must be exam question related.

Christopher's group. Powerpoint on how to dissect a chapter with examples.
Luis. Are you doing revolutions or are you back with Jessica's group?
Fern's group. Document with illustrations on stress reducing techniques. Tie in some history to it.

Project Proposal.
Submit an individual proposal that you would like to be considered for completion over the next 2 weeks. The proposal must be APWH related, in the form of something concrete that can assist with effective learning for the in-coming APWH class of 2011-12.

Some ideas below, but you should think "outside the box" too.
Think about what might be needed at the start of the year, in what form. What might be needed at Christmas to keep students somewhat engaged over the break. Same for the revision phase at the end of the year. Tthink about instructional materials that I could use/hand out to students, written, powerpoints, videos, podcast..go as technical as you like. Think about an effective summer pre-course assignment. Think about a study habits guide, how to break up the text and review book. You will need to consider what type of supporting material you can produce to get the desired effect of effective learning to occur. This is a GRADED assignment so the more comprehensive you make it, the higher score you'll get. I will be grading it on the basis of originality, clarity of proposal, evaluation of effective learning and the necessity that all group members will have defined roles to fulfill while you do your project, if its selected.

Guys, just a point of clarification about DBQ groupings: It is not REQUIRED that you use ALL of the 10 documents (or whatever numbner of docs you are given) when creating groups. You can use, for example, docs 1,2,3 for one group, docs, 2, 3, 5 for a second grouping and docs 4, 5, 10 for a third grouping. In this scenario, you did not use docs 6,7,8 and 9 for any of your grouping arrangements. It's fine, you've fulfilled the task of creating 3 independent groups, so you get the point.
If you do manage to use all the docs to create the groupings, great...but no extra credit for doing so.

Multiple choice test tomorrow. Be prepared! Keep studying using your recurring themes handout as a guide.

k, as most have you have submitted the essay by now....some tips for reviewing over the next few days.
Look over the "Recurring themes in World History" handout I gave you.
Identify which (or all) themes related to the 6 time periods.
Investigate (summarize) cause and effects, similarities and differences, as well as how the particular theme developed over time, where, when, how and why. (CCOT essay).
Put together specific key events, people, places, dates related to the particular theme.
Make linkages of information.
Understand and memorize.

Also visit the College Board website and become very familiar with the way the wording is used in each essay question. Review past papers especially for the DBQ. You will see pictures and maps so analyze these. We will do work on how to interpret pictures maps etc when we come back next week.

In class CCOT essay assignment for Tuesday. Time allocation 45 minutes.

You will be asked to respond to a specific essay question using "migration" as it's core theme. Migration is the physical movement of people from their region/country of origin to settle in another land/region. The time frame for the question will be 1200-1900 and you will be asked to analyze/discuss the theme of migration in two out of 3 area/region choices I will give you. You must pay attention to change and continuity of course too! Therefore you need to review chapters 14 -27 and look at some of the "push/pull" factors (reasons why, how, when, who and where migration occurred) related to migratory patterns.

Review the rubric for scoring the CCOT: thesis statement, evidence, details, analysis etc. Please don't email me asking questions...you have more than enough to go on, so hit the books and organize your response.

There will be evening class on Tuesday from 6-8/8/:30pm. Pot luck again so everyone should bring something. I have coke, so if you want another soda, please bring.

Know the evidence of political and social change for women
How did the US become so successful economically after the war.
What were the political and social changes among the settler societies in this ear.
How did japan move from a liberal democracy to a military controlled government.
Was the Great Depression inevitable or not?
Define "totalitarianism "and compare it in Russia and Germany
How did the Great depression effect politics in Latin America

For Friday's essay you will have a choice of 2 Compare and Contrast essays. (I've scrapped the Change & Continuity essay) within these essay titles I will give you options to choose from. These options will include political, cultural, economic, religious and social as well as giving you geographical regions to do your comparing and contrasting. Confused????, ok, the titles will be something like this...

Compare and contrast the religious/social/political/economic/cultural (I'll select 2 themes) of the "Clingon" and "Wazabi" empires (you will be given 3 empire options and asked to write about two of them)

You have been selected to create a FACEBOOK page for a particular character from the history we've done so far. Download the attachment to discover who you got!

Using FACEBOOK, create a detailed biography, fan pages, host albums of images related to your figures, and continual status updates written "in character" about events that have taken place during your time. For example, if you are Confucius, you might post (in real time) that you just had this idea called "Mandate of Heaven" and you think it's a cool thing to award to a good Chinese ruler. If you are Wu Ti, you might post on Confucius' page (as well as your own) that you agree and you plan to make full use of this Mandate of Heaven title to help you rule effectively over your subjects. Get the idea? Do all the usual things you guys do when you created and as you update your own FACEBOOK page.

Everyone should give their contact details to AUSTIN ROMAN Period 1 and PATRICIA EUSALA Period 3.... You two are responsible for creating AP Periods 1 & 3 groups that everyone should post their facebook page to, so that all AP students from both classes can view, add/post comments/make suggestions etc.. Please invite me to join: I will create a character called "Flamin' Nora on FACEBOOK. This is your first graded task for semester 2, so it's up to you if you're shooting for an "A" or a "C". In January we will gather for a 90-minute "virtual salon," in the Multi-Media Lab for viewing and commenting on each others pages.

As we approach the end of the Post Classical period with Chapter 15, it is IMPERATIVE you study and note-take on this chapter, as well as reading and reviewing the Global Retrospective from pages 340-341.

Please also go back to pages 120-125, read and pull things together in your mind about the major changes and continuities for the period in history. Any potential essay you will get will cover the entire span of time 500-1450CE and you MUST know the changes and continuities that happened across the globe, economically, migration, politically, tech and innovations religiously, arts, conquest etc.

For Ch 15 focus your reading on the following:
Be able to analyze if the rise of the west resulted more from western innovation rather than a decline in civilizations in the Middle east and Asia (or vice versa).

Guys and gals! Yes, your assignment was to read ch 5, culminating chapter on the classical period and i still want you to cover and know this chapter. However, we do need to press ahead with the post-classical era and Ch 6 begins this. Therefore, in addition, start reading ch 6 The Rise and Spread of Islam....fantastically interesting as it gives you a perspective of Islam and how politically, culturally and economically ( as well as religiously) it emerged and has consequences to our world today. We will being in-class work on ch 6 on Tuesday, quiz will be Friday on account of the short week. (So much for my attempts to get a Wed-Wed schedule going!!!)

Start your review of ch 5. This is a CRUCIAL chapter as it bring trends and developments together for all classical civilizations. Idealyl I want to get on a cycle of Wed-Wed with your quiz/test given on Wednesdays from now on. Sometimes this will not be possible due to interruptions, however.
Focus on how the classical civilizations declined globally-patterns of deline similar or different; and how the world was shaped in readiness for the post classical period. Note how new religions started to emerge, how key institutions and values were revived after decline and invasion.
