Welcome to Ms. Vos' American Literature class! The best way to contact me is by e-mail at [email protected]. I have a computer in my classroom, I check my e-mail several times a day, and I am able to send a quick response between classes if necessary. If e-mail is inconvenient, you may leave me a message by phone at (818) 837-5345. If you do call, please be patient, however, as it will take me longer to get back to you this way. I can only return phone calls during a length of time when I am not teaching. Again, thanks in advance for your cooperation. I look forward to meeting you and working with you this year! **Grades are updated every Friday. If I am in the process of updating a grade, it may not reflect your accurate grade until the update is complete. If you notice a "blank" or a "red shaded area" that means I have not yet entered a grade for that assignment. If that is the case, please check back later.

Introductory paragraph due today!
SAMPLE PARAGRAPH FORMAT:
1.TS: Define overconfidence in your own words.
2.Sentence: Explain why overconfidence can be bad or negative.
3.Sentence: Tie the literary world into your introductory paragraph, "Authors explore this idea in literature to teach people why they should avoid being overly confident."
4.Sentence: Add Edgar Allan Poe to the introductory paragraph, "One such author who explores this idea is Edgar Allan Poe in his story, "The Black Cat"."
5, 6.Sentence: "The Black Cat"/ "The Tell-Tale Heart" / "The Masque of the Red Death" (only use the stories you are writing about) are stories about... (summarize the stories in 1-2 sentences--you do not need to give too many details).
7.Thesis statement: In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat"/ "The Tell-Tale Heart" / "The Masque of the Red Death" (use only the stories you are writing about) the (characters) illustrate the theme that overconfidence leads to an individual's deminse/overconfidence.
Due:
Assignment
Pre-writing due today. This is steps 1-4 on the writing worksheets on the first page. SEE BELOW.
1. Develop a thesis statement [page 89 in your grammar book].
Write it here _________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
2. Review the text/literature to find 6 (9th grade) 9 (10th grade) appropriate references that support your thesis either by way of paraphrase or direct quotes (evidence). Think of this as gathering evidence to support your argument or assertion. Complete this step in a separate notebook or several sheets of paper. Remember to paraphrase where the passage is long (you will still need to cite, but you will not need to put the re-worded information in quotes). If you decide that the passage requires you copy it exactly as it is written in the book, you will need to put quotation marks around it to show that you have copied it.
3. Include the page number after each quote or paraphrased information. This is extremely important you do not want to be found guilty of plagiarism.
4. Analyze each quote or reference and tie it to your thesis statement. Here you will explain how the quote supports your thesis. This is the “analysis” section of your paper. For every passage/quote/piece of evidence, you will need to write 4 sentences that: 1.) Explain the quote 2.) Explain how it is relevant to your thesis statement, and 3.) Explain how it supports your thesis statement.
SAMPLE FROM CLASS:
"' By the bye, gentlemen, this--this is a very well-constructed house, ...These walls--are you going, gentlemen? -- These walls are solidly put together.'" (Poe 17). (EVIDENCE).
At one point in the story, the police officers go to the narrator's house to investigate a crime that they think the narrator committed. Once they investigate, they believe the narrator did not commit the crime so they start to leave. However, because the narrator is overconfident, he invites them back to show them how sturdy the walls are. When he does this, his cat meows and reveals that the narrator is in fact guilty of the crime. (SUMMARY/EXPLANATION OF QUOTE: THIS IS THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION TO HELP THE READER UNDERSTAND WHERE THE QUOTE CAME FROM.) This shows that overconfidence leads to a person's demise. Had the narrator not have been overly bold in inviting the police back, he would not have been caught. However, because he was overly self-assured, he got caught. (THIS IS THE CONCLUDING INFORMATION THAT TIES THE QUOTE TO THE THESIS STATEMENT. THIS IS YOUR ANALYSIS SECTION THAT PROVES THE THESIS STATEMENT).
**REMEMBER: YOU ARE TRYING TO PROVE YOUR THEME IN YOUR THESIS STATEMENT, "OVERCONFIDENCE LEADS TO AN INDIVIDUAL'S DOWNFALL." EVERY PIECE OF EVIDENCE YOU PICK MUST ILLUSTRATE SOME FORM OF OVERCONFIDENCE.
