Mrs. Alkazian P-American Lit Tutoring : Wednesday & Thursday 1:35-3:00 Year 2012-2013 TEXT: Prentice Hall Literature, Handbook for Writers, Edgar Allan Poe, Inherit the Wind, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Old Man and the Sea, and To Kill A Mockingbird. COURSE DESSCRIPTION This class will focus on reinforcing the student’s knowledge of essay structures and types with an aim towards increasing their writing proficiency. In this quest they will utilize their critical thinking skills to analyze American Literature from Native American Legends and Myths to the turbulent years of the 1960’s. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Students are required to bring a notebook, texts and pens to class everyday. 2. All homework assignments are due on the date scheduled. No late homework will be accepted. 3. The student is responsible for completing missed work due to an absence. Work is due within two days of return to school. 4. The students are expected to participate in class and group work. 5. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in: a zero on the test, quiz, or any written work, and a call to your parents with no possibility for making up the work. Depending on the severity of the infraction a disciplinary board hearing may also be called. 6. Any VIDEOS viewed in class will be listed on the video permission slip which must be signed by a parent before any films are shown. Failure to sign the slip will prohibit your student from viewing said video. TESTING PROCEDURE AND POLICY 1. Tests will be given at the end of each chapter or unit. 2. Vocabulary quizzes will be given each week on Fridays unless otherwise stipulated by the teacher. Other quizzes will be given at any time during the week preceding a chapter test. 3. Make-up tests will only be given to students with an excused absence. Students must arrange a time to take the make-up test during the teacher's tutoring days and within the week he/she returns to school. 4. Tutoring days will be Wednesday and Thursday after school as stated above. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR DETERIMING GRADES Tests 20% Quizzes 15% Midterm 10% Final Exam 10% Homework 10% Class work 10% Class Projects 20% Participation 5% DICSPLINARY RULES 1. Students must adhere to all the school rules as stated in the Parent/Student handbook. 2. Students must show respect for themselves, the teacher, and fellow students at all times. 3. Students are to be in their seats and ready to work when the bell rings or they will be marked tardy. 4. Students may not leave their seats until the end of class or as instructed by the teacher. 5. The Bell does not dismiss the class the teacher does. When the end of class bell rings students must remain in seated at the desks until the Teacher dismisses them. 6. Ipods, Cell phones and other electronic devices are to remain off at all times and put away in backpacks. Any student caught with an activated device will have it confiscated and turned in to the Deans. NO EXCEPTIONS. 7. Students must not engage in any disruptive behavior that would hinder the learning process. 8. There is no eating or drinking (except for water) allowed in the classroom. 9. Consequences for not following theses rules depending their severity are as follows: • First infraction – A warning by the teacher. • Second infraction – Phone call to parents • Third infraction – Detention with teacher after school • Fourth infraction – Referral to the Deans ESLRS: #2: One who is intellectually accomplished. Who demonstrates proficiency, at or above their ability level in: • Critical thinking skills • Problem solving skills • Written, verbal, and non-verbal communication • Core academic knowledge • Functional use of technology #3: A conscientious leader. Who manifests: • Respect for self and others • Responsible citizenship • Personal and civic integrity NOTE: With all due consideration given to the above stated guidelines, the final determination of the student’s grade rests with the professional judgment of the teacher. The honor code will be upheld in this course.
