PURPOSE:
To make an artifical membrane and study diffusion
MATERIALS:
Dilaysis tubing, Karo syrup, Plastic clips, Urinalyis strips
SAFETY:
Wear safety glasses
PROCEDURE:
1. Fill a beaker with 250 mL of tap water
2. Submerge dialysis tubing in water, wait 2 minutes. It takes some time for the tubing to "loosen up in the water so you can separate the 2 layers with your fingers.
3. Separate the 2 layers of tubing from eachother, close off one end with a plastic clip to form a "cup".
4. Put approximately 2 mL of Karo syrup in the dialysis "cup".
5. twist and close off the open end of the tubing with another plastic clip to complete your artificial karo syrup "cell".
6. Put your newly made karo "cell" in 250 mL of fresh tap water, test immediately with a glucose test strip. Record result of glucose test in Data table.
7. Take glucose readings every 8 minutes for 4 intervals (Total of 32 minutes), record data on table, table should have 5 rows for 5 glucose readings.
