THE BIG SHAKEOUT - TODAY (11/13)

Bishop Alemany High School has partnered with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) and Providence Holy Cross Medical Center to take part in the Great Southern California ShakeOut, the largest earthquake preparedness activity in U.S. history, on November 13, 2008.

This is a very important community activity and will be the focus or media, earthquake responders, public officials and government resources.

This disaster exercise is based on a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the San Andreas Fault.  The exercise will test the ability of emergency responders to deal with the impact of a major earthquake. Specifically, it will test our community’s ability to manage a sudden increase in patients injured as a result of the earthquake.

Some of our students will participate in this exercise as disaster victims.  Students will have make-up applied to simulate a variety of injuries from minor to severe.  Students will be taken by Alemany shuttles to the Alemany football field where they will be directed by LAFD and Providence Holy Cross staff.

Approximately 300 students will have simulated minor care provided to them in a portable tent located at the football field; other students will have simulated emergency care provided to them at Providence Holy Cross.  At the end of the exercise, students will be returned to Alemany High School.

Students should wear comfortable clothing and shoes to school that day-- since students will have simulated injuries and will be moving around, their clothing/shoes may get damaged during the exercise. Students will also have the opportunity to be a part of several earthquake preparation activities.

Disaster exercises are conducted to provide learning experiences, and to evaluate the effectiveness of disaster plans, training programs, and support materials and resources.  Thank you for your support of this important community activity.
