Make sure you have your STUDENT ID card with you. Put it in your wallet/purse/bag NOW so you don't forget it on Thursday morning.

If you are feeling under the weather tomorrow, and need to stay home, make sure you carve out focused study. All overviews of time eras done from a CCOT or a C&C perspective. Read and memorize the crucial transition pages from the textbook between the time eras. Completely memorize the rubrics for earning points on all 3 essays.

In developing your answers to the 3 essays, be sure to address the task by keeping these general definitions in mind:
(a) analyze means “to determine the nature and relationship of the component elements”
(b) compare and contrast means “to discuss similarities and differences”
(c) describe means “to illustrate something in words or tell about it”
(d) discuss means “to make observations about something using facts, reasoning, and argument; to present in some detail”
(e) evaluate means “to examine and judge the significance, worth, or condition of; to
determine the value of”
(f) explain means “to make plain or understandable; to give reasons for or causes of; to show the logical development or relationships of”

Download all attachments and study with a PURPOSE, not as a page turner. Everything you read/memorize must have a CCOT or a C&C focus in your mind. Challenge yourself to ask, "how would I use what I've just learned to fit a potential essay question?"

Use the transitions pages of the textbook as your guide...memorize everything contained on these pages, then drill down to evidence and facts supporting the trends that are outlined.

Again, don't waste time doing practice multiple choice questions over the weekend. As Paper 1 will be predominantly conceptual, your study of events/developments/similarities and differences, etc. from the different eras will benefit you for Paper 1

Advice from another AP "expert" regarding creating thesis statement.

Common Pitfalls

In writing history essays, students may think their task is simply to provide as much detail and information as they can, perhaps to prove how much they know. If they lack a sense of the overall purpose and structure of such essays, they will not see the central importance of the thesis statement within that structure.
Students in a hurry often fail to tailor the thesis statement to the EXACTdetails and form of the DBQ or other essay prompt. They need to pay attention to the question's details, and also to its form (e.g. compare and contrast, explain and describe, assess the validity, etc.), which can guide the way they structure their thesis statement and the essay as a whole.
Students may view the thesis statement as an absolute claim and may make sweeping assertions they can't possibly prove without qualification. They need to see a thesis as a tentative hypothesis, one they should qualify by referring to primary sources that seem to contradict it.
Students need to see that a vague or overly broad thesis statement will make their task harder, not easier. A specific and divided, or segmented, thesis will delimit the task more effectively and make it easier for the student to organize the rest of the essay.

First of all, why aren't you studying APWH instead of reading this? ok, so you need to read this, I get it!!
So, download the attachment, Civilizations Time Warp Bags. Do for ALL classical, post-classical and early modern empires/civilizations (up to 1750). This will be invaluable to you to for the C&C question. After you complete, do a similarities and differences review of at least 3 key empires/civilizations from each era. Remember, if they ask you about empires in the C&C question, they will ONLY use examples from within each time period.

In preparation for Friday's lecture on the long C19th, bullet point some responses to these prompts:
1. What key global changes occurred during 1750-1900? Think about how the globe operated before 1750 to help you select your points.
2. Ok, so 1750-1900 saw The West in the ascendency; i.e pulling the stings of most of the world outside of Western Europe. In what ways, specifically, was it ascendent?

C&C of Chinese, Indian and Med Civilizations classical period-economic and cultural factors. They asked about political control in 2010, so too soon to repeat. Know about the impact of confucianism from the classical period thru the Tang/Song dynasties.

C20th revolutions in Latin America, especially Mexico 1910; China 1911, and Russia 1917

Independence movements in Asia, Latin America and Africa in the C20th- breaking away from the confines of Imperialism. I want to give a lesson on this if time permits. Study it just in case.

Impact of Industrialization from the C18th to the present. Think Imperialism, the West being an economic power, WWI, Industrialization outside the West, etc. Other nations slow to catch up but leading to/sowing the seeds of our global market economy present day

Labor systems, feudalism, serfdom, slavery, encomiendas for a potential CCOT question.

Download attachment and learn. They could choose labor systems as a CCOT or a C&C question. Look at it from both perspectives

CCOT practice. Skeleton your response, not a fully fledged essay.
Write a thesis.
Identify and address one other change and one other continuity,.
Provide analysis of why these changes and continuities occurred. 2-3 sentences. Use phrases that indicate you are providing analysis.
List 7 pieces of evidence that would be included in your response. Ask yourself what factual information would support my essay.
Provide a World Historical Context....bring in another region of the globe and state how it interacted with your chosen region from the prompt.

Analyze the cultural (Remember that "culture" includes "Religion") and political changes and continuities in ONE of the following civilizations during the last centuries of the classical era.
China 100-600 Roman 100-600 India 100-600

Analyze major changes and continuities in the formation of national identities in ONE of the regions listed below from 1900-Present. Be sure to include specific countries in the region selected.
Middle East Southeast Asia Sub Saharan Africa.

Complete the CCOT essay. After you read and digest the prompt, write it and time yourself. Do not use the aid of textbook material or notes. Do it from scratch. Only use the scoring rubric to help guide your response. Don't cheat on yourself. We will peer correct On Monday so an honest response will let you see what you did well and not so well. Allow only 40 minutes to write.

Describe and explain continuities and changes in religious beliefs and practices in ONE of the following regions from 1450 to the present.
Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, Europe

Do this essay WITHOUT the help of notes or textbook. Timeyourself and alllw no more than 40 minutes. Be strict with yourself about this as it's a learning and correction opportunity for you. we will go over the attempts on Monday.

First, there's a possibility I will teach a class this Sunday, same times 9:30am-12:30am but will confirm this on Friday.
Second, read, understand, memorize how to earn point for the CCOT. Review the 3 sample essays and score them like a reader. Have justification for your scoring. I want a piece of paper with your name on it and a score for each essay. List your score for 2WW, then LJM then 2L in that order. These codes you will find at the top of the samples.

Here are some other lecture notes I want you to study and memorize, dealing with the period 1450-1750. Download below. Both are particularly useful from a CCOT perspective so pay particular attention to them. Identify political, economic and social changes and continuities from the Post classical period. These are very good overview of big items/events for the time period. Your job is to populate this information with names, places, regions EVIDENCE points etc.

Download the 2 worksheet and complete for Friday. If you don't do this I will record it in gradebook ARIES as a negative score.

Download Lecture 13, attachment. Read, understand and memorize. Put into the overall Post-Classical period and identify trends, changes and continuities from the Classical era.

Score the DBQ you took from today's practice. Pay particular attention to:
1. An effective thesis that addresses all aspects of the prompt. Time and place, analysis and inclusion of example factors. If only one factor is given, then no point. Minimum of 2 factors needed.
2. Three or more correct groupings. See scoring guidelines attachment below for acceptable grouping listed by document number.
3. Four points of view showing any or a combination of the following: purpose/motivation of author; clear and comprehensive analysis of tone, style; anticipated audience and what that audience will understand from reading of document.
4. Each document must be accurately understood. A summary of it will not suffice. Think does your essay answer this question; "What is the document about?"
5. Each doc must be coherently analyzed. Think, does your essay tell the reader that you've understood the message of the doc, what is it really saying/commenting on.
6. One missing document. Not from a voice that's already included in the 10 docs...a new voice that has credibility and in-depth knowledge of how particular factors helped shape the modern Olympics. If the justification doesn't EXPLICITLY address this, then no point.

Review and memorize index cards and retain in the context of evidence points for essay response.

Learn the scoring rubrics for all 3 essay formats for Paper 2. Start your review of the trends and high level developments using PERSIA from the Classical period. Don't wast time and commit to smart and focused review of content.

On to ch 34. Focus on the China-emergence of Taiwan development, the steps that Japan made politically after the war and the impact of colonialism and revolution in Vietnam. Again, make connections/patterns with other global regions in terms of post WW2 decolonization.

Writing Task: Outline the differences in C19th European nationalism and C20 African nationalism. Compare and contrast details of these forms of nationalism. Continue your review of ch 33.

First, carve out every waking moment for study and review. 5 weekends left so you MUST put forth all effort and concentration. Otherwise, you will FAIL!
So, a quick overview of ch 33. Focus just on the parts that deal with India and Egypt and the growth of Islamic fundamentalism. Be able to compare post-independence policies in India and Egypt. Look for patterns similar to what you learned about in Latin America. Second, know the influences that led to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and the resulting power grab in Iran.
Did I mention there is JUST 5 weeks before the exam...ok, let me tell you...there are just 5 weeks to the exam...not 6, 7 or 8....FIVE!!!!

Read and review ch 32. Focus on the following:
The development and political, social and economic changes in Latin America after WW2.

Ch 26. Civilizations in Crisis. This chapter continues the overall trend of western European intrusions into the Middle East and China. Focus your reading on the following:
1. Study and analyze the decline of Ottoman power in their empire and the subsequent birth of modern-day Turkey.
2. Examine the reasons for the failure of westernization in Egypt and subsequent direct involvement by the British and French in north African affairs.
3. Understand the Qing dynasty in China and what factors led to western European infiltration and influence in east Asia at this time.
Written paragraph for each of the above reading prompts.

Note:Based on an analysis of negative grade fluctuations and overall evaluation of effort and commitment to study, I will be meeting with some of you on Monday.

Read the 2nd half of chapter 25, pages 572 Economics to 588. Pay particular attention to Mexico, Argentina and Brazil's development/stumbling after independence. It's a bit confusing but this is where you need to know conservatives, liberals and others to help you swim through it.......slow down Karen, Andrea is taking in water again with all that swearing!

You also need to know the cultural implications of independence on the new nations. Be prepared for Friday

To chapter 24, Imperialism. Read through pages dealing with the British in India and Asian imperialism. Look at political decisions, impact on foreign socities of european imperialism, who the big players were and overall global impact.

Continue your review of ch 23 and focus more on the political revolutions that took place, their causes and effects for their respective societies. look closely at how new forces within nations impacted the political, social and economic conditions of their countries.

Read the Part V introduction to this new Industrial Age era pages 506-511. KNOW IT inside out and round the bend!...that's another one for you Omar!

Learn the who, what, where and when; then analyze the why and the how for each.

Using 500 BCE as a starting point, include examples from at least three

Task: Using the preferred response format of the Superman CCOT, do the same for this prompt. Essentially, just outline how you would respond to this prompt using the scoring rubric from Superman.
